We are a family of five living in a small rural community in the mountains. We garden, farm, and homeschool. Our life is chaotic with all of our animals and such but family time is very important to us. So at the end of the day we always find time to hang out. We will use this site to journal and share our adventures!

Pipe-cleaner Fun!

And is everyone ready for a new installment of our crazy life?!?! This time I think you should say no. Really. WARNING: the reading of this post and the viewing of the pictures may cause extreme laughter and stomach pain.

Dad left early this morning to go off and talk to people and do jobs and whatever else he does when he leaves. lol. I had two online classes that I had to attend, one at 9 and one immediately following at 10. My little sisters decided that today they were going to hang out with me during the day. lol. My classes were over. I had just finished a geometry lesson and Hailey had just gotten back from a bike ride. Zoey was on the computer downstairs computer looking up the information so that she could write a letter to an author of some of her favorite books, "My Secret Unicorn".
I was feeling a little down for whatever reason and then Hailey pulls out a drawer from out Art/crafts/Extra Dresser. Inside are pipe~cleaners and packing peanuts, that stick together if they get wet. I freak out grab the pipe~cleaners and say I am going to make a pair of glasses. I do. Bright green, Orange, and blue glasses.

When Hailey saw them.....well...I don't think I have ever seen her eyes get so big. hehe.

From there I move to making a crown. Just a simple crown. And that turns out great and I add four pillars and add another level. It still isn't enough. I add three more pillars and bring them all up to a point. And then I add a twisty in the inside hanging down and a twisty off the top.

By this time Hailey is making her own crown, and Zoey has come up and is making her own creation. I don't think I have had this much fun in a long time. It is theeee best!!!! I love my siblings!

Homeschool Rebellion

My children are in mutiny.  In what I thought was a moment of brilliance I assigned them an assignment today that I called their "caring day" assignment.  Their instructions went like this:

CARING DAY- Think of someone (not a kid friend) who would like to hear from you. If you called them it would really brighten their day. Brainstorm and make a list of 10 people. Put the list in the front of your binder. Pick one person. Think about a conversation. What will you ask them about themselves and their life? (example: how has work been lately?) What will you share with them about your life? Write down ideas on a piece of paper. You may call that person this morning or this afternoon when I am home.

Who knew that my moment of brilliance would create such havoc in our household?  Hailey has cried, marched around the house, slammed her bedroom door, and has now delivered me a list of book authors she could write to.  Authors!  And notice writing when I said calling.  I kindly told her that this assignment was supposed to be about reaching out, getting outside of our box, and seeing how we could positively affect others.  I patiently explained to her it was about making connections and thinking deeper than the usual friend we talk to every day.  Her reply was, "Yeah, well, you can think deeper Mom."

Zoey hasn't responded any better, although much more direct and not quite so emotional.  She just informed me that I simply should have assigned it to them for their research paper topic.  "And this isn't even a real school assignment,"  she said, "you just made it up!"

Sometimes I am the only one who thinks I am brilliant!.............Aubrey

Farm Day ~ Continued

Alright. So, I was told that the world needed a version of my farm day. lol. And I am more than happy to oblige. It was just like any other farm day in my opinion. Except for the rain. lol. The alpacas toes were long and they need wormer, we had been trying to fit in a day for a while, and this wet rainy morning, while far from perfect, seemed a good contender. Mom gets all of the stuff mathed out and we all head out. Its raining and cold. And we can't find the toe~clippers. We looked for about 30 mins, and still no clippers. So, trying to save face we begin with the wormer. Luckily for us, our neighbor walked passed and said that we could use hers. Dad headed up while the rest of us shoved more wormer down the alpacas throats. From there, we moved to inside the barn to do toes. Our procedure for this......it isn't exactly easy, but its a lot more humane than other ways. We take the alpacas in and dad and I press then against a wall. Then someone goes down and clips. Personally, I think that hardest part is when the alpacas try to lie down, which they do when they get nervous, this leaves me and dad holding the whole animal up with our legs. Anyway, it was another successful farm day and we made it out with only a couple scratches, bruises, and wormer alllll overz. :D ~!Aspen!~

Farm Day

The whole crew

Zoey trimming toes

Sometimes farm day is fun. Sometimes it is cold. But this time it was funny, cold, stinky, messy, and weird. We gave wormer to the alpacas, clipped their toes, and got spit on with wormer. The hardest of all was getting Bruiser’s toes clipped. He struggled and he pulled but in the end he took us 30 minutes when the alpacas took half that. …….Zoey

where is the alpaca?
Today we went out and did alpaca toes and wormer. Well that is a big job! Normally we use wormer that goes in a shot but this time we had to use wormer that you have to squirt down their throats. So we had to wrangle all 5 alpacas and the 1 goat, Brusier, in turn and give them wormer. The wormer went everywhere...we had it on our clothes and on the ground. We had some friends over who wanted to watch, learn, and help so they were covered in wormer as well. My dad went and lit a fire and we all went to get warm because the weather was not very good.

It rained so we were wet and cold but we still had toes to do. Toes were easier because we have a routine. We pin the alpaca or goat up against a wall and mom or dad goes down and trims the toes. At that point I got my hands on the camera and started having fun with that by taking pics of everyone over the alpacas. In some pics you can’t tell there is even an alpaca! It just looks like they are all cuddling. Well all together it seemed like a fun, but long morning…..Hailey
